Whoop, Establishing time. I had a thinkie that some of you might not know who Mary Seacole is, because I had a thinkie that I didn't know who she was until I started A-level history. I'm not sure if that's my history departments fault or what but either way, I should establish the facts, even if they are common knowledge and I was just a bit slow crossing the finish line.

Mary Seacole was a Jamaican nurse who did a lot of work during the Crimean war (1853-56), around the same time as Florence Nightingale (I was planning for Seb and Jess to have a little conversation about that but I cut it for time). Some historians argue that Mary Seacole actually did a whole lot more for the ailing and dying during the war and ran a much cleaner and nicer operation (Florence's hospital actually had the highest death toll out of all the Crimean war hospitals). This of course angered Florence, who some historians believe was actually just an entitled glory-hogging cow if you ignore her legitimizing nursing as a profession for women, who refused to work with Seacole and accused her hospital of being a front for a whore house. Yeah. But don't take my word for it, let Kate Beaton tell you!

Fun irrelevant fact about the Crimean war: Did you know that women actually went out to the Crimea as tourists to watch all the fighting going on? Because when I think of real life bloody slaughter, it's time to break out the popcorn.
